Should I add an RCD to an older electrical installation?
In many cases, yes. Elsäkerhetsverket recommends adding RCD protection to older installations because it provides additional protection against electric shock and some electrical fires.
Do I need to replace my electrical panel if it is old?
Not simply because of its age. The condition, protection, available capacity and suitability for how the property is used should be assessed first. If the panel is damaged, unsuitable, overcrowded or needs major modification, an upgrade may be appropriate.
What signs suggest that my electrical installation should be checked?
Repeated tripping, damaged electrical equipment, unusual heat, burning smells or visible deterioration should be investigated. The person responsible for the electrical installation also has a duty to keep it safe and use it appropriately.
Can you upgrade only part of my electrical installation?
Yes. Safety improvements can often be targeted to the areas that need them, such as RCD protection, breakers, grounding, surge protection or individual outdated components. A full replacement is not always necessary.
Who is allowed to carry out electrical safety upgrades?
Electrical installation work that requires professional authorization should be carried out by a registered electrical installation company. Elsäkerhetsverket specifically states that electrical work performed during building or renovation should be done by a registered company.
