Garden & Pathway Lighting FAQ

Important questions about outdoor fixtures, placement, controls and electrical installation.
How do you prevent outdoor lighting from creating glare or looking overlit?
We plan fixture position, mounting height, beam angle and brightness so the light reaches paths, steps and landscape features without shining into windows or creating harsh hotspots. The goal is controlled visibility and depth, not maximum brightness.
What IP rating should outdoor lighting have?
The required protection depends on where the fixture is installed and how exposed it is to rain, moisture, soil and water. Fixtures in exposed garden areas generally need stronger weather protection than those installed under a covered entrance or roof.
Can outdoor lighting be controlled automatically?
Yes. Depending on the installation, outdoor lighting can be controlled with timers, dusk-to-dawn sensors, motion sensors or smart controls. We can plan different zones so pathway, entrance and landscape lighting do not all need to operate in the same way.
Should pathway lights be installed on both sides of the path?
Not necessarily. Alternating fixtures or carefully spaced lights on one side can often provide enough visibility while creating a cleaner result. The best layout depends on path width, curves, level changes and surrounding planting.
How do you light trees and landscape features without damaging the garden?
We plan cable routes and fixture positions around roots, planting beds and irrigation where possible. For tree lighting, beam angle and distance are chosen to highlight the canopy or trunk without excessive brightness or unnecessary disturbance to the landscape.
Can the outdoor lighting system be expanded later?
Yes, if future expansion is considered during the original planning. Cable capacity, control zones, transformer or driver capacity and suitable connection points can be planned so additional fixtures can be added more easily later.
What affects the cost of a garden lighting installation most?
The main factors are the number and type of fixtures, cable distances, excavation requirements, access, ground conditions, control systems and whether a suitable outdoor electrical supply already exists. We assess these before providing a quote.
