SAFER EV CHARGING

EV Charging Safety Upgrades Protect. Upgrade. Charge Safely.

Safe EV charging depends on more than the charger itself. We inspect and upgrade the electrical supply, protective devices, cable capacity and panel where needed to help ensure your charging installation is suitable for sustained high electrical loads.

The required safety measures depend on the charger, existing electrical system, cable route and protective devices. We inspect the installation before recommending upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about charger protection, RCDs, panel capacity, main fuses and electrical safety.
Do I need a separate RCD for my EV charger?
Yes, an EV charging point should have its own residual-current protection and should not simply be connected under the property's existing RCD. Depending on the charger, the required protection may be built into the unit or installed separately.
Does my electrical system have enough capacity for EV charging?
EV charging creates a relatively high electrical load for long periods. We can check your main fuse, electrical panel and available capacity to determine whether the existing installation is suitable or whether load balancing or another upgrade should be considered.
What is DC fault protection and why is it needed?
EV chargers can produce DC residual currents. The charging installation therefore needs suitable protection against DC fault currents. Depending on the charger and installation, this may be provided by the charger itself or by additional protective equipment.
Do I need to replace my electrical panel to install or upgrade EV charging?
Not necessarily. If your panel has sufficient capacity, available space and suitable protection, replacement may not be needed. We assess the existing installation first and only recommend an upgrade where required.
Can surge protection help protect my EV charger?
Surge protection can provide additional protection against transient overvoltages that may affect electrical equipment. Whether it should be added depends on the existing installation and the protection already in place.
Who is allowed to carry out EV charger electrical work?
Installation of an EV charging point must be carried out by an electrical installation company registered for the relevant type of electrical work. Elsäkerhetsverket recommends checking the company through its “Kolla elföretaget” service.
